Sanna Ahvenjärvi, Composer
I am a bold crasher, emotional melodist, complex composer who can also compose "simple" music. My works are characterised by an emotional catharsis, comfort and an almost therapeutic vibe. My compositions often stem from human emotions and the different phases of life.
The Miracle Overture and Lullaby were inspired by the joy of pregnancy and motherhood, while my chamber opera Hiekkasilmä (Sand Eye), composed to a libretto by Jenni Kinnunen, centers on a mother suffering from postpartum depression.
Fingers to the Bone and Juoksen perässäsi elämä (Running After You, Life), based on poems by Elina Salminen, explore themes of stress, burnout, and compassion toward oneself.
The String Quartet No. 1, dedicated to the memory of my mother, portrays the struggle against severe illness, the fading of life, and the grief of loved ones.
The piano piece Too Brave Too Young is dedicated to all who have faced severe childhood trauma e.g. the death of a loved one, violence, war, refugeehood or natural disaster.
Nature, its healing power, climate change, and the importance of protecting the environment are also themes in several of my works. In Water — a Teosto Prize–winning piece composed together with Tapio Lappalainen — the music depicts, among other things, a calming lakeside landscape, the crashing sounds of glaciers melting due to global warming, and the vibrant colors that signal the death of coral reefs.
For me, composing can be a deeply meditative and calming experience, especially when I’m not in the hectic final stretch of a project.
My works have been performed at festivals, concerts, and tours around the world — in 14 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America e.g. ISCM (New Zealand), Stockholm New Music and Båstad Kammarmusik (Sweden), Tage für Neue Musik in Zürich (Switzerland), Uuden Musiikin Lokakuu and Musica Nova (Finland), Arpa GRAZiosa and stART (Austria), GegenWelten and Passauer Saiten (Germany). My portrait concerts were held in Salzburg and in Heidelberg.
My compositions have been performed by the Oulu Symphony, Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, The Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, TampereRaw, Northern Opera Company, Duo Gelland, Stadler Quartett of OENM, Arctos Ensemble, Koiteli Collective and Bodø Sinfonietta among others.
Collaboration with composer Tapio Lappalainen
In addition to my own compositions, I have also been co-composing music with my composer husband Tapio Lappalainen since 2013, which is very rare in the field of classical art music. The result is music that neither of us would compose on our own. Our long relationship has given us a superpower of mutual discussion and understanding, which allows us to work together, respecting each other's ideas and thoughts.
The work "Water" for symphony orchestra, commissioned by the Tampere Philharmonic, was awarded the Teosto Prize 2023, one of the largest art prizes in the Nordic countries.
“Water is a cohesive and vividly visual contemporary music work in which water moves through its various states, with swirling currents and rolling waves. Although water is a classic theme among composers of art music, the musical texture of Water is distinctive and imaginative. Effects such as instruments and microphones submerged in water naturally support the music written for more traditional orchestral instruments. Through artistic expression, the work brings attention to the current state of our environment.”
